Banafsheh Hemmati Brings Body Geometry to DIFC: The Contemporary Language of Islamic Patterns

Artist and Designer Banafsheh Hemmati

Dubai has earned its reputation as a global meeting point for art, design and culture. Exhibitions like Body Geometry reflect this evolution, presenting heritage as a living dialogue between past and present. Here, Islamic geometry - with its centuries-old patterns, is redefined as a contemporary visual language that resonates across cultures and generations.

Opening on 9 October 2025 at DIFC’s Satellite Gallery, Body Geometry marks the first UAE solo exhibition of independent artist-designer Banafsheh Hemmati. The showcase presents a collection of wearable jewellery and sculptures, where the two disciplines enter into conversation. Positioned at the intersection of art, design and philosophy, the exhibition explores the relationship between body, space, and geometry, inviting viewers to encounter form in new and unexpected ways while also revealing the artist’s design process.

At the heart of Body Geometry lies a redefinition of three foundational Islamic geometric patterns. Traditionally, Islamic philosophy moves from multiplicity toward unity. Banafsheh reverses this flow, from unity toward multiplicity, to create a layered contemporary space. Her jewellery elevates adornment into a dialogue with the body, while her sculptures expand these forms into the environment, transforming geometry into an architectural experience.

“My practice is shaped at the intersection of art, design, and philosophy,” Banafsheh explains. “Body Geometry is a research-based project, where not only the finished pieces but also the design process is shown. I’m interested in redefining Islamic geometric patterns and exploring their potential across scale, from the wearable to the architectural.”

Banafsheh’s work has previously been seen at Dubai Design Week and across two editions of the DIFC Sculpture Park. Her 2023 installation Seven Cypresses - blending Gothic and Islamic geometries, was acquired by DIFC’s collection, while her 2024 site-specific work The Eternal Gateway reinforced her reputation as one of the few independent artists shaping DIFC’s cultural landscape.

With Body Geometry, Banafsheh’s continues this trajectory, presenting her most expansive and personal collection to date. Jewellery that feels talismanic and sculptures that reimagine space together invite viewers to see geometry not as rigid repetition, but as a field of infinite possibility.

Body Geometry will be open to the public from October 9th to 31st, 2025 at Satellite Gallery, DIFC.
