Emily Ratajkowski, Phoebe Bridgers, and Liu Wen Wore Tory Burch to the 2023 Met Gala

Model and author Emily Ratajkowski wore a custom beige tulle gown crisscrossed with black silk tape in the pattern of Chanel’s signature matelassé. Each panel of tulle was engineered in an A-line silhouette with gray pearls embroidered throughout. The entire dress was made by hand, including the geometric corset, inspired by Karl Lagerfeld’s Chanel spring 1993 couture collection.

Musician Phoebe Bridgers wore a custom gown in lingerie mesh and duchesse satin with hook-and-eye closures and a pleated chiffon train. Every seam was hand-stitched with ivory pearls, with strands of pearls draped across the back — an abstract take on Bridgers’s signature skeleton suit and a nod to Lagerfeld’s inventive use of pearls at Chanel.

Model Liu Wen wore a custom black and ivory gown reminiscent of the 1950s, when Lagerfeld was designing for Jean Patou. The bodice was sculpted from rows of black grosgrain ribbon, each individually hand-sewn and engineered to curve around the body. Layers of black and ivory tulle fan out beneath the skirt, embroidered with an abundance of handmade, hand-painted silk organza flowers.

All looks were designed and handmade in Tory Burch’s New York atelier.
