Born from her own search for swimwear, co-founder Heidi Gosman spotted a gap in the market for perennial pieces and joined forces with Penny Klein to launch the Heidi Klein brand.

L’Officiel Arabia speaks to Heidi Gosman for a  deeper insight into her personal journey, her brand's ethos, and the collaboration with Temperley London.

Delna Mistry Anand: How have your early years helped in influencing the aesthetic and values of the Heidi Klein brand?

Heidi Gosman: My early years have been instrumental in shaping the aesthetic and values of the Heidi Klein brand. Having direct access to our customers has been invaluable; it’s like having a constant focus group. I’ve always believed that listening to our customers is key. Whether I’m in the design room or on the shop floor, their feedback is crucial in guiding our decisions. The brand was born out of this very philosophy—when we first opened our Notting Hill store, we started as a third-party brand store. However, it quickly became clear that there was a gap in the market. Our customers were asking for mix-and-match swimwear options and styles that simply weren’t available. That’s when we decided to create our own line, and we’ve never stopped listening to our customers since.

Necessity is the mother of invention, they say. And the idea for Heidi Klein came through one such story, by spotting a gap in the market. How do you continue to identify gaps in the market?

Absolutely and it’s our customers who are at the heart of everything we do. From the very beginning, our focus has been on understanding and anticipating their needs. We constantly engage with them, whether through direct interactions or feedback from our stores and online platforms. This ongoing dialogue allows us to identify gaps in the market and innovate accordingly. Our customers are truly the driving force behind every new product we develop.

What is your partnership with Penny Klein like through the years, and what unique strengths or characteristics do each of you bring to the table?

My partnership with Penny has been incredibly strong and enduring. As women in business, it’s empowering to have a partner who truly understands and supports you through both the highs and lows. We’ve navigated the challenges of building a brand together, and this shared journey has strengthened our bond. We complement each other perfectly—Penny is more commercially minded and drives the business side of things, while I focus on the creative and branding aspects. This balance has been the key to our successful partnership over the years. We each bring different strengths to the table, and together, as women, we create a dynamic that works beautifully, empowering each other and our brand.

Tell us about Heidi Klein's collaboration with Temperley London, and the new Capsule Swimwear Collection that has been recently launched.

I’m thrilled about our ongoing collaboration with Temperley London. After the exceptional success of our initial partnership, it was clear that our customers absolutely loved the blend of Heidi Klein’s chic swimwear and Temperley London’s elaborate, romantic prints. Working with Alice Temperley has been a truly inspiring experience. We’ve taken some of my favorite swimwear silhouettes and infused them with Temperley’s signature style, creating a collection that offers a unique and distinctive experience.

Sustainability is increasingly important in the fashion industry. How do you incorporate sustainable practices into your collections, particularly in the choice of fabrics and production processes?

Sustainability has always been at the core of our brand. Our philosophy is that a Heidi Klein piece is an investment that should last you for years, season after season. We are committed to sourcing the finest fabrics that not only feel luxurious but also stand the test of time. This commitment extends beyond just the materials we use—it influences every aspect of our production process, from how we manufacture our pieces to how we ship our products. Sustainability is a mindset that permeates our entire team, and we are always striving to improve our practices to minimize our environmental impact, it’s an on-going journey.
