Paris prepares to welcome a major fashion exhibition this summer as the Musée Maillol presents a retrospective dedicated to Gianni Versace. Opening on June 5, 2026, the show marks the first large-scale tribute to the Italian designer in France since 1986, offering a wide-ranging look at a body of work that reshaped late 20th-century fashion.
Bringing together nearly 450 pieces, the exhibition spans garments, accessories, sketches, archival footage, and interviews. Around 120 silhouettes form the core of the display, tracing the evolution of a designer whose visual language merged classical references with contemporary culture. The scenography, conceived by Nathalie Crinière, adopts a powerful, immersive approach that reflects the energy associated with Versace’s runway shows.
The exhibition charts the origins of Versace’s aesthetic, beginning with his early years in Calabria, where he learned dressmaking in his family’s atelier. From there, it moves through a network of influences that shaped his work, from the imagery of Catholicism to the forms of Greek sculpture and the theatricality of Italian opera. Baroque art, with its intricate ornamentation and dramatic compositions, appears as a recurring thread, visible in the richly patterned textiles that became a signature of the house.
Fashion is presented here in dialogue with art and popular culture. References to figures such as Sandro Botticelli and Pablo Picasso sit alongside the bold graphic language of Andy Warhol. This interplay highlights the way Versace drew from both historical and contemporary sources, building a visual identity that resonated across disciplines.
Photography also plays a central role. Images by leading photographers including Richard Avedon and Helmut Newton contributed to the global image of Versace’s work, capturing its theatrical presence and sculptural qualities. These photographs, along with runway footage and magazine archives, recreate the atmosphere of an era defined by spectacle and media influence.
The exhibition revisits Versace’s close relationships with figures in music and cinema, from Madonna to Princess Diana. It also acknowledges the role of supermodels such as Naomi Campbell and Cindy Crawford, whose presence helped define the visual culture of the 1990s and amplified the designer’s international reach.
Paris holds particular significance in this narrative. Although Versace contributed to Milan’s rise as a fashion capital, he chose the French capital as the stage for his haute couture line, Atelier Versace, launched in 1989. His presentations at the Ritz on Place Vendôme became defining moments of the fashion calendar, blending performance and presentation in equal measure. The exhibition echoes this legacy through a layout inspired by the runway, guiding visitors through a sequence of spaces that reflect the rhythm of a show.
Arriving on the eve of the 30th anniversary of his death and what would have been his 80th birthday, the retrospective positions Versace’s work within a broader cultural context. It revisits a designer who expanded the role of fashion, placing it at the intersection of art, celebrity, and visual culture, and whose influence continues to resonate today.
