You’ve probably heard the phrase “capsule wardrobe” tossed around in every fashion influencer’s TikTok or Instagram Reel lately. But beyond the trend, a capsule wardrobe offers something truly valuable: clarity and structure. Simply put, it’s about fewer pieces, smarter choices and building a wardrobe that actually works for you.
For many, having a capsule wardove means quicker decisions in the morning, less overconsumption and greater savings by investing in versatile basics. It’s also an incredibly effective way to reduce clutter and create a more sorted wardrobe space.
A classic capsule closet is one that reflects your lifestyle and aesthetic while still leaving room to add personality with a few quirky pieces or statement accessories. But where do you start? To help decode the art of streamlining your closet, we turned to expert organiser Shelina Jokhiya, Founder of DeCluttr Me, for her step-by-step guide.
Step One: Declutter with Purpose
Before curating your dream capsule, you need to remove anything that doesn’t serve you. The idea of a full-scale wardrobe purge can feel overwhelming, so she always recommends beginning with a mini-declutter. Spend just 15-20 minutes focusing on a single hanging rail, drawer or shelf, and please resist the urge to pull everything out at once.
Declutter any item that doesn’t fit, hasn’t been worn in the past year, makes you feel less than great, is damaged, duplicated, or simply doesn’t align with your current lifestyle. If you still can’t decide, try it on. If you wouldn’t step out wearing it today, it’s likely time to let it go.
Be intentional with your exit strategy: donate, discard or resell. High-value pieces can go on second-hand resale sites or designer consignment platforms. If something is torn but fixable, take it to your tailor. And be strict with donation timelines: once the “donate” pile is ready, remove it from your home within the week. Otherwise, it’s just delayed clutter.
Step Two: Upgrade Your Space
After the declutter, it’s time to set your space up for success. Clean your closet and assess your storage. Velvet hangers are ideal; they’re slim, non-slip and help clothes hang neatly without bulk. Reserve wooden hangers for heavier pieces like structured coats, blazers or abayas. Incorporate storage boxes for accessories and invest in dividers or baskets if needed for a neater, more functional flow.
Organise clothing by type and then by colour - from light to dark, for a boutique-like feel. Keep frequently worn items at the front and rotate seasonally, with winterwear or occasion pieces stored toward the back. Woollens and jumpers should be folded to preserve their shape. Aim to hang as much as possible for clear visibility. Ideally, you should be able to find what you need in five seconds or less.
Reserve prime drawer space for underwear, socks, and nightwear, and place accessories in labelled boxes, on higher shelves or under the coats so they’re visible but not in the way.
Step Three: The Capsule Checklist
Now, look at what remains and ask yourself: Do I have the essentials? These are the timeless pieces that form the backbone of your wardrobe.
Here’s a smart guide to capsule staples:
White, neutral, or black t-shirts (3x)
White shirt (1x)
Neutral tank tops or bodysuits (2–3x)
Little black dress – easily dressed up or down (1x)
Midi dress (1–2x)
A-line skirt and one patterned option (1x each)
Tailored black trousers and leggings (1–2x)
Quality jeans (1–2x)
Shorts (1–2x)
Blazer (1x)
Trench coat and wool coat (1x each)
Knitwear: jumpers, cardigans, turtlenecks
Sweatshirts (2–4x)
Footwear: trainers, loafers or flats, heels (1–2x), boots (1x)
With these basics, you can build endless combinations whether for a cup of tea with friends, boardroom meetings or an evening out.
Step Four: Travel Like a Stylist
One of the best rewards of a capsule wardrobe is stress-free travel. Packing becomes an intuitive process once you know your essentials. Create a packing list in advance and invest in packing cubes to organise your outfits by category. Use one cube each for underwear, tops, bottoms, dresses and loungewear. Roll your clothes to maximise space and store small items in zip-lock bags or pouches.
And the result will be a super organised suitcase, an easy outfit selection and a relaxed packing experience.
A capsule wardrobe truly allows you to elevate your everyday style, while making smarter fashion choices. Whether you’re dressing for meetings or moments of leisure, having a curated wardrobe ensures that you always feel put together, with minimal effort and maximum impact. Because eventually, true style is about what brings out the best in you.
