#INTERVIEW: A Journey Through Art, Technology, and Nature With Marina Frederova

Since its inception in 2017, Cosmodreams has evolved from a cautionary tale of ecological collapse to a celebration of nature’s beauty and fragility. By blending traditional painting techniques with modern technologies like AR, VR, and 3D printing, it creates immersive experiences that connect classical art with contemporary storytelling. Each exhibition reflects a deep respect for cultural diversity and invites viewers to explore the harmony between futuristic cities and natural phenomena. Ultimately, Cosmodreams inspires reflection on humanity’s relationship with progress while reminding us of our shared responsibility to protect the delicate balance of the cosmos. Let’s delve into the world of Cosmodream with an Interview of the Artists herself, Marina Frederova.

L’Officiel Arabia: How has your perception of nature and the cosmos evolved since theinception of the Cosmodreams series in 2017?

Marina Frederova: This exhibition takes its name from the Elements of Nature, as environmental and natural themes are central to the Cosmodreams Project.

This topic has always been deeply important to me. Initially, I focused on highlighting the potential ecological disaster—a dystopian future where nature no longer exists. My earlier works aimed to sound the alarm about this pressing issue.

However, recently, I’ve shifted my approach. Instead of focusing on the grim possibilities, I’ve been trying to draw attention to the beauty and fragility of nature. By celebrating its delicate wonders, I hope to inspire a deeper emotional connection and a sense of responsibility in those who experience my work.

This change in perspective reflects my belief that hope, and admiration can be powerful motivators for action—sometimes even more than fear.

For me, nature is a profound and essential part of life, and I believe it is our shared responsibility to protect it rather than destroy it.

My works, represented in Cosmodreams and Elementa, aim to inspire harmony and coexistence between humanity and nature. Through these projects, I strive to show that our relationship with the natural world doesn’t have to be one of destruction or dominance. Instead, it can be rooted in mutual respect, understanding, and balance.

By blending art and technology, I hope to create an emotional connection that reminds us of the beauty and fragility of nature—and the importance of preserving it for future generations.

Can you describe the process of integrating traditional painting techniques with modern technologies like 3D printing and digital media?

In Cosmodreams, painting and sculpture are the primary art forms, while digital components serve to connect classical art with a broader, modern audience. By integrating traditional artwork with interactive experiences such as AR, VR, and video art, I can explore new storytelling opportunities and create a richer narrative.

Art critics often comment that my paintings resemble movie stills. They’re right—these are frames from the inner movie of my imagination, which I now can share with others through digital technology.

We embrace new technologies, viewing them not as a threat but as an opportunity. Just as cinema didn’t replace theatre, or movies didn’t replace books, these new tools coexist with traditional techniques. They expand the artist’s palette, offering exciting ways to express creativity.

The process itself is highly collaborative, involving the work of a dedicated team. As the director of this creative journey, I write the script and draw detailed sketches for each scene of the AR scenario. This ensures that every element is thoughtfully planned and seamlessly integrated.

One of the most fascinating aspects of working with 3D sculptures is their adaptability. Once I’ve completed the design and achieved the desired outcome, the sculpture can be reproduced in any size or material without losing its essence. This opens up incredible possibilities for presenting the artwork in different contexts.

New technologies have become an invaluable addition to the artist’s palette. They offer exciting tools to push creative boundaries and bring ideas to life in ways that were once unimaginable.

What inspired you to explore the interplay between futuristic cities and natural phenomena in your works? And how does Cosmodreams invite viewers to reflect on humanity’s relationship with technological progress?

The world of Cosmodreams is incredibly diverse, encompassing a wide range of topics and themes. Although it is pure fantasy, it offers glimpses into various versions of alternate realities. Each viewer can find something that resonates with them—be it pristine, untouched nature or a futuristic alien city.

Through my work, I hope to encourage humanity to embrace new technologies and progress wisely, always preserving the human soul and integrity.

I came across a phrase on social media that perfectly aligns with my own thoughts:

I need AI to clean the house and wash the dishes, so I can paint or write a poem—not the other way around.”

This beautifully captures the balance I envision technology as a tool that enhances our humanity, not something that replaces it.

What significance do you find in merging the vastness of space with the intimate details of everyday life?

The world of Cosmodreams celebrates diversity on every level, from the micro to the macro. It explores the tiniest details of existence and the vastness of the universe, reminding us that everything in the cosmos is interconnected and important.

This perspective reflects my belief that no matter how small or vast something may seem; it has its place and purpose in the grand design of the universe. Cosmodreams invites viewers to reflect on these connections and find beauty and meaning in every scale of existence.

To me, external exploration is infinite, and inner exploration is equally boundless. Looking into a human eye, I see a universe within—just as atoms and ions mirror the structure of planets and satellites. I believe we should explore both outwardly and inwardly. As an artist, I strive to show the strength and complexity of human character. Like Neil Armstrong said, “One small step for a person, one giant leap for mankind.” Achieving any great goal requires deep self-belief. Personally, I often tell myself, “If not me, then who?”

Could you elaborate on how cultural and national values are represented within your Cosmodreams series? and how does your personal experience as an urbanite shape the narratives within your artwork?

From the very beginning, we envisioned Cosmodreams as a traveling exhibition, and it has already been showcased in countries such as Russia, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and China. For each location, we make subtle modifications to enrich the visitor experience and create a deeper connection with the audience.

When presenting Cosmodreams in different countries, I immerse myself in their history and mythology, explore cities, and draw inspiration locally. This process allows me to bring a unique and meaningful perspective to each exhibition.

Art is deeply personal, and through my artworks, I share my own perception of each country while showing my respect for its traditions and values. It’s my way of connecting with people across cultures and celebrating the richness of our diverse world.

What message or feeling do you hope viewers take away from experiencing Cosmodreams: Elementa?

Every artist has a unique world to share, and our goal is to invite others into ours. We use various mediums to create this immersive experience, allowing others to step into our universe. In the Cosmodreams project, we build an experience where visitors can fully enjoy and lose themselves in a fantasy world. I hope that after visiting, people feel as though they’ve witnessed a beautiful dream and travelled to another planet.
