Delna Mistry Anand: Which aspects of the plastic surgery industry - cosmetic or reconstructive, inspired you to follow this career path?
Dr. Dragana Spica: Aesthetic surgery, without a doubt, was the aspect of plastic surgery that truly inspired me to pursue this career path. The transformative power of cosmetic procedures extends beyond physical appearance; it has a profound impact on a person's mental and emotional well-being too, and I find it incredibly rewarding to help individuals achieve their desired appearance, that often leads to increased self-confidence and overall happiness. This field has allowed me to blend artistry with science, creating tailored solutions that enhance natural beauty while addressing the unique needs of each patient. Seeing the positive changes in my patients' lives, not just in how they look but in how they feel about themselves, is what drives my passion for aesthetic surgery.
Social media and celebrity culture have played a big role in inspiring people to enhance their facial features. What is your opinion on this phenomenon? And what are the most requested procedures?
Yes definitely, social media platforms have become powerful tools and influencers play a crucial role in shaping new beauty standards and promoting these procedures. Trends in cosmetic surgery come and go, but currently, popular procedures include non-surgical options like Botox, fillers, laser resurfacing, and thread lifts, as well as more traditional surgical options like facelifts, eyelid surgery, and brow lifts. What is a positive trend is that most patients prefer natural results that enhance their features without looking overdone.
What are the most common misconceptions about plastic surgery?
A prevalent misconception about plastic surgery is that it always results in an artificial or 'plastic' look. Many people assume that undergoing cosmetic procedures will make them look unnatural or drastically different. However, this belief often stems from seeing poor surgical outcomes, where the results may appear exaggerated or overdone. Successful plastic surgery should enhance an individual’s natural features in a subtle and harmonious way, preserving their unique identity rather than altering it completely. My objective as a surgeon is to achieve a natural and youthful appearance that complements each patient's inherent beauty. By focusing on balance, proportion, and personalised care, I aim to provide results that look refined and authentic, helping patients feel like the best version of themselves without the obvious signs of having had work done.
What are the risks and benefits of undergoing plastic surgery?
Risks include physical complications and potential negative impacts on mental health if patients are dissatisfied with the results or have pre-existing psychological conditions. However, the benefits can be substantial, both medically and psychologically, as plastic surgery can significantly boost a person’s confidence and self-esteem.
How do you ensure realistic expectations for your patients?
Ensuring realistic expectations for my patients is a crucial aspect of my practice. Good communication is essential for achieving a successful outcome. I always encourage my patients to be open and honest about their desires, goals, and concerns. This dialogue allows me to understand their motivations for seeking surgery and to provide a thorough explanation of what can realistically be achieved. It's important for patients to understand that while surgery can provide significant improvements, there are limits to what can be achieved, and results can vary based on individual anatomy and other factors.
What advice would you give someone who’s contemplating cosmetic enhancements for the first time?
It's crucial to think carefully about what you want and why you want it. Approach all cosmetic procedures, whether surgical or non-surgical, with caution and deliberate consideration. Don’t rush the decision; take your time to ensure it's right for you.
What do you believe is the future of plastic surgery?
The future of plastic surgery lies in minimally invasive techniques. There is a clear trend toward innovative approaches that reduce the need for large scars and extensive recovery periods, making the procedures safer and more appealing to patients.
What innovations or technologies are you most excited about in the field?
I'm particularly excited about nanotechnology, which is revolutionising plastic surgery. Nano-structured materials are advancing wound healing, enabling skin to repair faster and with less scarring.
Currently, many young people travel out of Dubai for cosmetic work. Do you see that changing? And what is the vision of Kings’?
Dubai is rapidly becoming one of the world’s top destinations for cosmetic surgery, with the highest number of cosmetic surgeons per capita in the region. While cost may be a factor for some traveling abroad, I haven’t noticed a significant trend. King’s vision is clear: to be the premier hospital for plastic surgery, supported by the best doctors in the field. And we are continuously working towards our vision.
