Gemy Maalouf has long been a trailblazer in the world of luxury fashion. The Lebanese designer, renowned for pioneering the "Couture à Porter" concept, has redefined accessibility in high fashion, making red-carpet elegance attainable for women who seek both sophistication and comfort. With over three decades in the industry, Maalouf’s designs continue to capture the essence of Beirut’s dynamic spirit while striking a cord with the global clientele. From her intricate craftsmanship to her seamless adaptation to the evolving tastes of the Middle Eastern and international fashion markets, Maalouf’s journey is a testament to creativity, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to artistry. In this exclusive conversation with L’Officiel Arabia, she shares her inspirations, the evolution of her brand, and the timeless appeal of her signature designs.
Delna Mistry Anand: Gemy, you were the first designer to launch the “Couture à Porter” concept in Lebanon back in 1996. What inspired this bold move, and how has it evolved?
Gemy Maalouf: I have always admired how celebrities looked so beautiful and confident in their red carpet-dresses and wondered: why shouldn’t all women feel this way? My vision was to make these looks accessible, not just in terms of price but also in comfort and wearability. I wanted women to move freely and feel at ease while still looking glamorous. What started as a pioneering idea has now become a common practice in the fashion industry.
Over the years, you’ve maintained a deep connection to your Beirut roots. How do you keep that essence alive while connecting to a global audience?
Beirut is a city of contrasts, full of energy, with highs and lows that have shaped me as a designer. I’ve always turned to fashion as a form of escape, a way to create beauty regardless of what’s happening around me. That sense of freedom, of finding joy despite the chaos, resonates with people everywhere. Fashion is a universal language, and I believe my designs carry that message beyond borders.
What inspires you to create designs that beautifully merge modernity with tradition?
I don’t believe in following trends for the sake of it. I stay true to my aesthetic, creating styles that stand the test of time while continuously evolving through new fabrics, cuts, and techniques. It’s about striking a balance: respecting craftsmanship and heritage while infusing designs with a fresh perspective that keeps them relevant.
With over 30 years in the industry, you’ve built a brand that stands out on the global stage. What according to you, is the key to maintaining a strong presence in luxury fashion?
Patience and not being afraid to fail. I tripped along the way, but I always stood up again. Not every idea works, and that’s part of the process. What matters is to keep going, to adapt, and to never let setbacks define you. Fashion is constantly evolving and staying relevant means embracing change while staying true to your vision.
You have always maintained that the Middle East is a significant part of your clientele. How does the Dubai market influence your collections, and how do you tailor your designs for the region?
Yes, the GCC is a key market for us. The Arab woman is dynamic, well-traveled, and has a deep appreciation for fashion. She seeks exclusivity but also comfort, which is why we offer customization services to ensure each dress feels personal. We design with versatility in mind, making sure our pieces cater to different preferences while staying true to our brand’s DNA.
And finally, please share some insights into your Resort collection—how do you incorporate the essence of the Holy Month into your designs while staying true to your signature style?
Our Resort collection naturally includes kaftans and kimonos, which fit beautifully into the Ramadan season. Gemy Maalouf has always had styles that embrace modesty in an elegant and effortless way. For the Holy Month, we create pieces specifically designed for Arab women, blending sophistication with ease, styles that are both refined and in high demand during this time.
