Silver Reign: Lakme Fashion Week X FDCI Celebrates 25 Iconic Years

For a quarter of a century, Lakmé Fashion Week X FDCI has been the crown jewel of Indian fashion, shaping trends, launching icons and defining the country’s cultural zeitgeist. What began in 1999 as India’s first official fashion week has evolved into a globally respected platform, weaving together stories of fashion, beauty, modernity and individual expression. Powered by The House of Lakmé, the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI), and Reliance Brands, this landmark silver jubilee edition not only reflects on its rich legacy but also gives a glimpse of what to expect in the future, raising the bar once again with an impressive lineup of designers, powerful initiatives and never-seen-before collaborations.

The five-day 25th anniversary fiesta was hosted at Mumbai’s iconic Jio World Convention Centre. In its quintessential style, Lakmé Fashion Week X FDCI artfully balanced Indian craftsmanship with contemporary global aesthetics, celebrating not just the trends and garments but also the years of artistry, heritage and India’s indomitable wealth of creativity.

The festivities kicked off on a high note with Anamika Khanna making a grand return to the runway, unveiling her prêt label AK|OK in collaboration with Lakmé 9to5’s Hya-Matte collection. Titled Silver Collar, the collection saluted the modern power woman with sharply tailored silhouettes, innovative draping, and sartorial strength. Strong, structured blazers and bold, asymmetric cuts defined the collection, embodying the ethos of confidence and contemporary femininity.

Lakmé Fashion Week X FDCI 2025 continued its legacy of championing both celebrated veterans and exciting new talents. Tarun Tahiliani, known for his signature opulence, unveiled OTT, a ready-to-wear line that integrated his intricate craftsmanship with a fresh, modern sensibility. Shantnu & Nikhil, through their youthful diffusion line S&N, delivered a collection brimming with understated elegance, making a compelling case for contemporary Indian occasion wear. The FDCI's Khadi India showcase took sustainability to centre stage, spotlighting the beauty of India’s indigenous textiles. Labels like Ka-Sha, Nikasha, and Niki Mahajan presented reinventions of khadi in fluid silhouettes, proving that eco-conscious fashion can be both timeless and on-trend.

In a commitment to cultural exchange, Lakmé Fashion Week X FDCI welcomed ZA_ZA from Moscow Fashion Week, a collaboration that underlined the platform’s growing international outlook. The Russian label brought an avant-garde perspective to the Indian runway, reinforcing the event’s reputation as a melting pot of global aesthetics.

One of the defining moments of the season was Lakmé Fashion Week x FDCI’s collaboration with Fashion Trust Arabia, marking India as FTA’s Guest Country for 2025. This saw three renowned Arab designers take centre stage, bringing the allure of Middle Eastern artistry to the Indian fashion landscape. Salim Azzam mesmerized audiences with his ethereal, butterfly-inspired embroidery, a nod to Lebanon’s mountain villages. Kazna Asker redefined Middle Eastern fabrics through a bold, street-style lens, drawing inspiration from her Yemeni-British heritage, while Yousef Akbar took over the runway with sculptural drapes, gold orchids and bold silhouettes. This exchange of culture and creativity further highlighted India’s deepening connection with global fashion.

Amit Aggarwal, in collaboration with tech brand Nothing, presented a futuristic showcase that blended Banarasi textiles with metallics and techno-futurism. Models walked down the runway in structured metallic bodices and shimmering handwoven drapes with a Nothing phone in their hands. Falguni Shane Peacock, known for their signature sparkle, took luxury travel as inspiration, partnering with Lufthansa to create a jet-set-ready collection that blended wanderlust with haute couture. From shimmering aviation-inspired motifs to bold, structured silhouettes, the collection was all about cosmopolitan glamour.

Beyond the catwalk, Lakmé Fashion Week X FDCI continued to champion conscious fashion and sustainability. The R|Elan™ Circular Design Challenge highlighted emerging designers who are redefining waste and sustainability in high fashion. Rkive City, one of the standout participants, presented a bold and futuristic collection crafted from repurposed materials, pushing the conversation forward on circular fashion. The audience welcomed the long-anticipated debut of ASOS in India with great enthusiasm.

And in conclusion to the five spectacular days, a grand gala - teeming with the who’s who of the fashion world, paid tribute to Lakmé Fashion Week X FDCI’s extraordinary 25-year journey. Iconic designers who have shaped its legacy returned to the runway with exclusive creations, each piece a testament to the evolution of Indian fashion through the decades. The vibe was electric, the applause thunderous, and the evening resonating with the industry’s most influential voices.

More than just a fashion event, Lakmé Fashion Week x FDCI 2025 stood as a movement - one that sets the tone for the standards of luxury, creativity and cultural evolution in India’s fashion space. For a quarter of a century, it has been more than a runway; it has been a canvas for artistic expression, a launchpad for trailblazing designers, and a beacon of India’s creative excellence. As it steps into the future, one thing is certain: Indian fashion isn’t just thriving - it’s setting the global standard.
