Taj Mahal, New Delhi

While many hotels hold residence in a city, it's only the rare few that actually belong to its DNA. For almost four decades, Taj Mahal, New Delhi (affectionately called the Mansingh) has stood at the point where history, diplomacy and culture meet, welcoming heads of state, royalty, artists and travellers into Delhi's unfolding story. Following an extensive renovation that has seen the hotel rethink everything from its culinary legends to its Luxury Residences, Dr. Anmol Ahluwalia Area Director - Operations, and General Manager - Taj Mahal, New Delhi speaks to L’Officiel Arabia in a conversation about what it takes to make a grand hotel feel like home.

Delna Mistry Anand: Delhi, with its rich post-colonial and Mughal past, is the gateway to India. Talk us through how Taj Mahal, New Delhi actively participates in Delhi's cultural narrative through the years.

Dr. Anmol Ahluwalia : Delhi has always been a city of many layers. When I first came to Delhi, I thought it was all about the imperial - the Mughal, the colonial, the Lutyens'. But as you walk the lanes and by-lanes of the city, you realise Delhi is also about Indraprastha, a deeply rooted cultural influence. Delhi is a confluence of many cultures, and at Taj Mahal, New Delhi, we see ourselves not simply as observers of this beautiful story unfolding in front of us, but as active contributors to its writing.

For almost four decades, our hotel has welcomed heads of state, royalty, diplomats, artists, entrepreneurs and travellers who have all become part of Delhi's evolving narrative, and the narrative of Taj Mahal, New Delhi. We are located in the heart of central Delhi, and sit at the crossroads of history, diplomacy and culture. Beyond hospitality, we have always celebrated India's artistic heritage: we have curated several culinary experiences, we have had stories of revival with artisans, we’ve had exhibitions depicting the beauty of this country, literary evenings, cultural performances and immersive storytelling. So, whether it is the lost, forgotten cuisines of Indraprastha, or India's glorious festivals like Holi, Raksha Bandhan, Ganesh Chaturthi, Parsi New Year, Christmas or Eid, we have always celebrated each with authenticity, showcasing  the contemporary craftsmanship of India. At every point of time, we make sure that our guests experience the soul of Delhi and the cultural nuances of a country when they stay with us..

DMA: When you decided to undertake the extensive renovations at the hotel, what was the internal discussion like - how did you decide what could change and what had to remain?

AA: I wasn't present when the renovation began, but having spoken to colleagues who were, such as our Managing Director and our Executive Vice President of Operations, the fundamental question was this: how do we make the Mansingh timeless? The objective was never to reinvent Taj Mahal, New Delhi, but to ensure we evolve it. ‘Reinvention’ was not the priority; evolution was.

We wanted to introduce contemporary comforts, sustainable technologies and modern luxury, while protecting the emotional memory that generations of guests and associates have experienced with this hotel: the warmth of the Taj, the intimate scale on which this hotel was built, the feeling of a residence rather than a hotel, the elegance of the public spaces, and all the personalised nuances that make the Mansingh the most beautiful hotel in the city. Every conversation was centred around respect for our heritage, respect for our guests, our colleagues, and respect for the legacy built over decades. And that is why it feels contemporary, yet unmistakably Taj. That has been the essence of our innovation and continuity.

Rambagh Suite

DMA: With its unique range of accommodation experiences: Luxury Residences, Taj Club, Signature Suites and traditional rooms, guests have different expectations depending on what they book. How does Taj orchestrate coherence across those experiences, and what is the common thread that connects them?

AA: Beautifully put. While each accommodation category offers a distinctive experience, the philosophy behind all of them remains remarkably simple. Whether a guest is staying in a Luxury Residence, a Signature Suite, a Taj Club room or a Deluxe room, every touchpoint is intended to be warm, intuitive and genuine. These are the three pillars on which the service philosophy of this hotel is constructed.

Luxury, for us, is not about a space, but about being recognised and remembered. Our teams are trained to anticipate guest needs, not merely respond to them; to become part of the story: personal preferences, dining habits, a guest's choice of room. The product may differ, but the emotional experience remains constant throughout the hotel, and this is what Tajness is: you can feel it with your eyes closed.
