Across a career that has spanned Disney sitcoms, prestige television, the deserts of Dune and some of the most discussed red carpets of recent times, Zendaya has always carried a certain stillness, graceful and yet cool. That quality forms the very foundation of her partnership with On, and of its second chapter.
The Swiss brand, best known for shoes that seem to spring back from the pavement, first joined forces with Zendaya on the belief that movement should look and feel effortless. This new collection, developed once again with Law Roach, the stylist behind many of her most memorable fashion moments, takes that idea into the heightened, physical world of the action film.
The python print sets the tone. Custom-designed for the collection, it appears on a bodysuit, a form-fitting long-sleeve top and a half-zip anorak. "Each season we're elevating everyday basics," Zendaya says. "With this collection, we had fun with a python print that acts like a modern camo." The print works as texture, a kind of urban camouflage for a woman on the move. Elsewhere, oversized crew necks and sweatpants carry thoughtful ruching and bungee cord detailing, so each piece can be drawn in, released or reshaped as the day changes. "For this collection we brought our personality and love of print to technical fabrics," says Roach, "designing pieces to make you feel good when you move in them."
The collection's most unexpected piece is set to be its most coveted. The Cloudnova Moon arrives in a new Mary Jane-inspired silhouette, pairing an engineered knit upper with refined speed laces in three colourways: Clove and Ivory, Dew and Antler, and Black and Ivory.
The campaign film comes from Pantera, the Argentinian directing trio known for bringing a distinct fashion sensibility to everything they touch. Here, they borrow the visual vocabulary of classic action cinema, placing Zendaya at the centre of choreographed sequences she moves through with total ease. The film is playful, and it is also a practical demonstration, with every piece shown working with the body. Cass Bird's accompanying stills capture the same energy, with Zendaya moving with purpose and a little attitude.
"Cinematic storytelling has been a cornerstone of our partnership with Zendaya from the start," says Alex Griffin, the brand's Chief Marketing Officer. "We've always wanted to create work that goes beyond traditional advertising – building worlds that entertain, surprise and invite people in." What emerges is a clear sense of where performance wear is heading: toward clothes that move as well as they look.
