In a world where fashion media often follows a narrow standard of beauty, Jyoti Matoo is changing the narrative. As the founder of Voir Fashion Magazine, she has created a digital-first platform that celebrates diversity, inclusivity, and empowerment.

In this exclusive interview, Matoo opens up about her journey, the challenges of being a woman entrepreneur, and her vision for the future of fashion.

Tanja Beljanski: What inspired you to create your digital fashion platform?

Jyoti Matoo: After spending over a decade in luxury cosmetics and working as a freelance stylist, I often felt unseen and unheard in an industry that celebrated only a narrow definition of beauty and style. I worked with incredible women from all backgrounds, shapes, and sizes, yet I rarely saw them represented in mainstream media. It became clear that there was a real gap — so many voices, including my own, weren’t being acknowledged. That realization was my turning point.

I created Voir Fashion Magazine because I wanted to build something different — a digital-first platform where diversity isn’t just a buzzword but the foundation. I wanted to amplify the voices and stories of those who, like me, had felt overlooked. Voir is a space where creativity thrives, where real representation matters, and where fashion and beauty are accessible to all — regardless of race, size, shape, or budget.

Back in 2013, when I pitched my concept for Voir, I was often told I didn’t have a "real" magazine and was laughed out of rooms. But I believed in the vision, even when it was hard to gain traction. It was only when COVID hit that the digital shift I had always envisioned truly took hold. The pandemic accelerated the movement towards digital platforms, and suddenly, the world was ready for what Voir had to offer. Now, more than ever, we continue to push boundaries, creating bold, innovative content that empowers the next generation of women to be seen, be heard, and dare to be different.

What makes Voir different from other fashion magazines?

In an era where fashion, beauty, and media are rapidly evolving, Voir Fashion Magazine leads the digital revolution — cutting through the noise with content that resonates with the next generation.

From daily web content to premium quarterly digital issues, Voir is more than just a magazine; it’s a platform for creativity, diversity, empowerment, and change. We break traditional molds by showcasing artists, designers, and influencers in fresh, unexpected ways — partnering with industry experts who stand for meaningful progress.

At Voir, representation isn’t a trend — it’s a necessity. Every woman, regardless of race, size, shape, or background, deserves to see herself reflected in the fashion and beauty industries. That’s why we amplify underrepresented voices, challenge outdated beauty standards, and create space for stories that need to be told.

With diversity in our DNA and an unwavering belief in female strength, we make fashion and beauty accessible to all. Our inclusive, audience-first approach connects brands with the next generation, offering exclusive insights into shopping, trends, and culture.

At Voir, we don’t just report on fashion — we redefine it.

Who or what inspires you the most?

I feel incredibly blessed to have been surrounded by amazing women throughout my life, like my mother and two grandmothers, who have consistently empowered and inspired me. They taught me to take risks, be fearless in pursuing my dreams, and never give up.

However, my biggest inspiration comes from my father. He faced unimaginable adversity after tragically losing his own father in India. Coming from a wealthy background, he went from having everything to nothing. He moved to the UK with very little and built his own business from scratch, demonstrating an incredible work ethic and resilience. His journey has been tough, but what he has achieved is truly remarkable.

Entrepreneurship is not for the weak. It takes grit, determination, and a willingness to face challenges head-on. My father’s journey has been a constant source of strength and inspiration for me.

What is it like being a woman entrepreneur in todays world?

Being a woman entrepreneur in today’s world is both challenging and incredibly rewarding. While there are more opportunities than ever, we still face unique obstacles — whether it’s securing funding, gaining recognition, or being taken seriously in industries historically dominated by men.

That said, there’s power in navigating this space as a woman. We’re often forced to think outside the box, innovate, and find creative solutions to the hurdles we face. The movement toward empowerment, representation, and diversity is stronger than ever, and I’m proud to be part of this shift.

Entrepreneurship requires resilience, adaptability, and an unshakable belief in yourself. We have to challenge the status quo, push for equal opportunities, and build a community where women support each other. The challenges are real, but the rewards of breaking barriers and seeing the impact of my work on other women’s lives are what drive me every day.

What has changed the most since you launched Voir?

The most significant shift has been the rise of digital-first platforms and how media consumption has evolved. When I launched Voir, the idea of a fully digital fashion magazine was unconventional. Today, digital media dominates, and social media, video content, and influencer marketing have reshaped the industry.

Another key change has been the growing demand for authenticity and inclusivity. When I first started, diversity wasn’t as widely celebrated. Now, there’s a significant push for more diverse voices, body types, and cultures to be acknowledged. At Voir, we’ve always made inclusivity a priority, and I’m proud to see the industry moving in the right direction.

What is your vision for Voir moving forward?

My vision for Voir Fashion Magazine is to continue evolving as a platform for change — one that empowers women, celebrates diversity, and disrupts traditional fashion media norms.

We’re focusing on building stronger relationships with brands, artists, and influencers who share our values of inclusivity and creativity, and who are committed to making a real impact.

I also want Voir to be at the forefront of digital innovation — creating content that’s not only relevant but interactive and immersive. Whether it’s through new technologies, social media, or community-driven experiences, I want Voir to continue offering something fresh and exciting. We want to connect with our audience in ways that are meaningful to them and create spaces for women to feel seen, heard, and empowered.

And finally, as we look to the future, I see Voir Fashion Magazine as not just a publication but a movement — a platform that continues to inspire, educate, and celebrate the next generation of fearless, creative women who dare to be different.

What kind of role do you think fashion will play in the future?

Fashion is constantly evolving, and I believe it will continue to play a transformative role in the future — both as a form of self-expression and a tool for social change. The future of fashion will be more inclusive, more sustainable, and more digital than ever before. It will break free from traditional ideals of beauty and size and reflect the true diversity of the world around us. With the rise of body positivity and a growing emphasis on authenticity, I believe we’ll see even more brands embrace and celebrate all types of beauty, creating a space where everyone feels seen and heard.

Sustainability will also be a huge part of the future of fashion. The industry is already making strides toward more ethical practices, but I believe that in the coming years, it will be impossible for brands not to adopt sustainable practices as consumers demand more responsibility and transparency from the companies they support. Fashion will no longer be about the quantity of items we buy but the quality, longevity, and ethical sourcing behind those items.

Another important aspect is how fashion will continue to intertwine with technology. Digital fashion, augmented reality, and virtual influencers are just the beginning. The fashion experience will become more interactive and immersive, offering a new kind of personal expression through digital platforms. This will allow individuals to explore different styles, create new identities, and even shop in entirely new ways.

In essence, the future of fashion is about embracing change. It’s about telling diverse stories, empowering people to express themselves freely, and creating a more inclusive, sustainable world. I’m excited to be part of this evolving landscape and to continue pushing for a fashion industry that reflects the world we live in.

What are you most passionate about, besides fashion?

Beyond fashion, I’m incredibly passionate about empowering women and creating spaces where they can truly feel heard, seen, and supported. Throughout my journey in the industry, I’ve realized just how important it is to uplift others and build communities that foster growth, creativity, and confidence. I firmly believe in the power of mentorship—helping women find their voices, guiding them through challenges, and showing them that there are no limits to what they can achieve.

I’m also deeply passionate about social justice and diversity — advocating for equal representation and fighting against the stereotypes that persist in various industries. Representation truly matters, and by amplifying underrepresented voices, we can break down barriers and create a world where everyone feels valued and respected.

In addition, I’m passionate about travel and immersing myself in new cultures. It has helped broaden my perspective and continually fuels my creativity. I’m also on a fitness journey right now, which has been a game-changer for me. As an entrepreneur, I’ve learned that it takes an immense amount of resilience to succeed, and the gym has become a space where I recharge and strengthen my mindset. It’s helped me in ways I never imagined and continues to empower me both physically and mentally.

What pushes you forward?

What pushes me forward is the unwavering belief in the impact I can make —not just through fashion, but through the larger conversations I’m trying to spark around empowerment, diversity, and representation. Every time I see someone connect with Voir Fashion, whether it’s a woman who feels seen for the first time or a brand that aligns with our mission, it drives me to keep going.

I’m also fuelled by the incredible people around me — my team, the creatives, and the mentors who continue to support and challenge me. Their dedication and belief in what we’re doing inspire me to push past any doubts or setbacks.

And, honestly, the challenges themselves keep me going. The journey hasn’t been easy, but I thrive on turning obstacles into opportunities. The ability to innovate, to create something new, and to know that we’re helping pave the way for a more inclusive future in the industry is what keeps me motivated.

A huge driving force is also my family. I’m doing this for them. My parents have been on this rollercoaster with me, and every time I’ve felt like giving up, I think about them and everything we’ve been through together to get to this point. Their support, sacrifices, and belief in me keep me grounded and remind me of the bigger picture. I do this for them—and for the legacy I want to build for our future.
