Fashion in the Gulf region continues to evolve with designers who draw from cultural memory while shaping a contemporary voice. Bahraini designer Zahra Ali stands among a new generation redefining modest fashion through refined craftsmanship and a clear creative direction. As the founder of Zahra Line, she has built a label that speaks to women seeking identity, confidence, and thoughtful design. Her work often reflects an intuitive connection to nature and emotion, translated into clean silhouettes and carefully considered details. With growing international recognition, her collections reach audiences beyond the region while staying grounded in Bahraini culture.
In this conversation with us, Zahra Ali shares insights into her creative process, her understanding of luxury, and the evolving language of her brand. She discusses how structure and experimentation coexist in her studio, and how collaboration helps shape each collection with clarity and purpose across different markets today worldwide and beyond.
Tanja Beljanski: Your work consistently reflects a dialogue between heritage and modernity. How do you approach this balance when developing each new collection?
Zahra Ali: I believe that having a clear idea and a strong, direct concept for each collection makes the process much easier. When the vision is defined from the beginning, it gives a clear direction throughout development. At the same time, having a strong brand identity helps maintain consistency while still allowing room for evolution.
Nature appears to be a recurring source of inspiration in your designs. How do you evolve this narrative season after season without it feeling repetitive?
Nature and timelessness are at the core of what we do. We focus on strength, simplicity, and elegance. Each season, we reinterpret these elements in new ways, whether through innovative techniques like laser work or through collaborations and customisation with artists. For us, creativity has no limits, and that is what keeps the narrative fresh.
Zahra Line has built a strong identity within modest fashion. What, in your view, defines true luxury in this segment today?
For us, true luxury is defined by sustainability and quality. We strongly believe that brands in the Arab world can stand at the same level as international labels. Today, we are reaching clients around the world because of the beauty we deliver, our commitment to quality, and our belief in our concept. We know this is only the beginning of something even bigger.
Your collections often carry an emotional and storytelling dimension. How important is narrative in your creative process, and where does it usually begin?
Emotion is at the heart of my creative process. Whether it is happiness or sadness, my feelings always guide me and inspire new ideas. From there, we develop the creative direction to build a complete vision around that emotion. I also believe that my team is my strength, and they play a key role in bringing these stories to life.
As your brand continues to grow internationally, how do you adapt your collections to resonate with a wider audience while preserving the essence of Bahraini culture?
From the beginning, we focused on creating diverse lines within the brand. We design abayas, dresses, gowns, kids-wear, ready-to-wear pieces, as well as hijabs and accessories. This variety allows us to connect with a wider audience while staying true to our identity. No matter how much we grow, the essence of Bahraini culture remains at the core of everything we create.
